Hiện nay chưa một virus nào được khẳng định chắc chắn là virus gây ung thư ở người vì không thể làm thực nghiệm virus gây ung thư trên người. Tuy nhiên một số virus có những bằng chứng về dịch tễ học, huyết thanh học hoặc phát hiện được genom hay kháng nguyên của chúng từ các tế bào ung thư người.
Virus papilloma người (human papilloma virus: HPV)
HPV được coi là virus chỉ gây ung thư người. u nhú lành tính nhưng có thể tiến triển thành ung thư biểu bì da, nhất là những người hệ thống miễn dịch bị tổn thương.
Papillomavirus là một thành viên của họ Papovavirus bao gồm Papilloma,
Polyoma và Vacuolating (SV40) virus.
Chúng có ADN hai sợi vòng, đối xứng hình khối. Papilloma virus lớn hơn về genom và đường kính so với hai nhóm kia. Ung thư cổ tử cung và biểu bì bởi HPV liên quan đến hai protein được mã hóa bởi gen HPV là E6 và E7. Những protein này đã ức chế hoạt động các protein được mã hóa bồi các gen ức chếung thư là P53 và Rb (retinoplastoma), được tìm thấy trong các tế bào bình thường.
Có ít nhất 60 týp HPV khác nhau, nhiều týp gây ra các biểu hiện lâm sàng riêng biệt. HPV týp 16 và 18 được coi là gây ra ung thư cổ tử cung.
